It is also vital for development activities to run smoothly. Available resources can be utilized properly in peace. Infrastructures are constructed and people can do their jobs freely if there is security as well as law and order. A well-maintained peace and stability also earns international fame for a country. But peace has not been easily earned in the human history. Many countries have long been passing through devastating conflicts. Since 1983, the Sinhalese-dominated government in Sri Lanka had been fighting until recently against the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a group trying to create a separate nation for the Tamil minority in the northern and eastern parts of the country.
Only recently the suppressive government made major breakthroughs and peace has been restored there. Intifada, meaning ‘uprising’ in Arabic, was started by the Palestinians against the Israelites in 1987 and it still remains unresolved. HutuTutsi Civil War in Rwanda has been continuing for several decades. Indo-Park territorial tension over Jammu and Kashmir has not ended yet. Nepal witnessed a decade of civil war which has just been settled through the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord 2006 and the promulgation of a new constitution through a Constituent assembly. History shows that violence is by no means good. The two great wars called world wars in particular caused unprecedented Suffering to the mankind. Though violence has been applied sometimes as a means of political and cultural revolutions, it cannot fully be justified for the destruction it has caused. It is quite better if we try to achieve our goals through peaceful measures even if they may consume longer time.
In the human history, even the greatest reformations have been possible through peaceful means. The Maoist rebels for example eventually joined the, peaceful movement with other parliamentary parties of the country for revolutionary changes in the country. Peace brings happiness and prosperity but violence only agony and misery. Therefore, the entire world community must be working unitedly to promote peace, understanding and cooperation for the common good. The modem societies are so complex that they are likely to generate conflicts. But the more we can reduce conflicts, the more can we be benefited and we do possess this capability.
Definitely, violence is not a true human character. So we must try to end our disputes through peaceful efforts. Every government should try to make fair distribution of its resources. with better chances to the needy population. Democracy that is based on peaceful co-existence and mutual respect is crucial. Our wisdom. skills and technological advancements should only be used for the cause of peace and construction, Above all feelings of mutual respect should come from every human heart.
